How to stay productive & motivated while working from home.

We've probably all had the luxury of being able to work from home at some point - and while at first, it feels exciting and amazing that we get to work in our pyjamas and eat cereal at 3pm without being judged by the whole office, the novelty can soon wear off and you find yourself sat there wondering why you just can't find the motivation to do anything.

Being able to get yourself focused and find your productivity while by yourself can be tricky, and so, we've compiled a list of tips on how to stay productive and motivated whilst working from home...

Don't work from your bed.

As tempting as it may be to set your alarm for 08:55am, haul your laptop onto your lap and log-on for 9, we can guarantee you won't be at your most productive whilst working from under your duvet. If you don't have a desk at home, your dining table will work just fine - but it's so much better to be sat up straight and at some kind of work-space. Get up at a reasonable time, grab yourself a cuppa and some breakfast and then get started!

Work when at your most productive.

One of the best things about working from home, is that you get to manage your own time (depending on your diary, of course). If you know that you're at your most productive in a morning, then get started early so you can cut yourself some slack when you drop off a little in the afternoon and hit that 3pm wall. Similarly, if you work the best in the afternoon or evening, focus on your biggest tasks at this time. There's nothing worse than trying to complete something when your head isn't in it.

Allocate set times for emails.

This is something that you could probably apply to a normal office-day too, but there's nothing more distracting than that little email notification at the top of your screen every five minutes. So, resist the temptation to read your emails as they come in, and switch them off. Then, allocate some time every so often to read and reply and deal with anything that needs to be dealt with.

Don't worry about missing something urgent while your emails are turned off - if there is something really urgent, someone will call you!

Get dressed & put your shoes on.

Similar to the first point, working in your pyjamas can sound like a dream... until you lose your productivity and find yourself wanting to climb back into bed with netflix instead. So, get yourself dressed and even put your shoes on! Tricking your brain into thinking you're at the office or going out can really help to get your motivation back. Sometimes, it can help to actually go out, too! Head to your local coffee shop for a little change of scenery to boost your mood.

Focus on one task at a time.

And don't switch until you've completed it. Sometimes, we can find ourselves getting 90% of our tasks 90% completed because we try to multitask a little too much, or we get bored and attempt to switch things up. Next time, work out your to-do list for the day, and simply focus on one thing at a time. Once you've ticked an item off, then - and only then - let yourself move onto the next thing.

Try it next time you're working at home and see how much more productive you feel!
